Obviously, our axolotl friends do not appreciate this.
While it's easy for us to cool off with an ice cream smoothie or a dip in a pool, it's up to us to find ways to beat the heat for our gilldren.
That said, let's jump in to today's tips!
Best Ways to Cool Your Axolotl's Tank Temperature
I have heard horror stories of folks who have lost their entire collection due to a heat spike.
Life is stressful enough without having to constantly worry about our pet's safety.
And good news:
Taking some steps in keeping an axolotl tank cool isn't as hard as you might think.
1. Use an aquarium fan
When it comes to owning axolotls...
Fans are your friend.
It's amazing how just circulating the air causes the temperature to drop.
For many people, this is really all they need to maintain the perfect safety zone for their axie.
A good fan can bring the temperature down between 4-6 degrees lower.
Not bad for the price!
You can point a big flat(ish) fan you get at the store down on your tank, but that might not look very good.
Though they can be a bit noisy, aquarium specific fans look pretty sleek and do the job.
Your floofs will thank you!
2. Invest in a chiller
If you're one of those unfortunate folks who love axolotls but live somewhere the heat is just crazy intense...
... A fan may not cut it for you.
If you've tried fans and it's still just too uncomfortably warm for your lotl aquarium, you may have to take more drastic measures.
Enter the aquarium chiller.
Chillers are a great way to ensure your aquarium stays at a stable temperature, giving you more peace of mind (which can really help justify the additional cost).
There are DIY versions you can make, though that can be quite tricky, or you can buy them online.
Different styles of chillers are available at different costs.
This kind is silent and relatively small, and can be mounted on the top of the tank.
Now some other versions come in at a higher price point, but can be installed under the tank and are very powerful.
There are others out there, but you likely will be very impressed.
3. Location, location, location
Let's face it...
Where you put your tank can have a significant impact on the temperature of your axolotl's home.
Some places are just way hotter than others, for various reasons.
Basements for most people are generally cooler than the rest of their house.
Garages can be as well, especially when placed on a concrete floor.
Also, the nearer the floor, generally the cooler it is as well as air temperature tends to increase with height in your room.
That said, temperature can greatly fluctuate during the day.
While these things can help, it doesn't always guarantee the temperature will remain stable for your babies.
Taking precautionary measures against heat spikes is always a good plan.
Bonus Tip: Ice Bottles
Frozen water bottles of ice or ice packs can be used to reduce the temperature in a pinch, such as if the fan or chiller goes out.
Generally the big 2 litre soda bottles filled 3/4 to the top with water and frozen are used.
(Smaller ones are used for smaller tanks.)
However there are some caveats.
The main one is how fast they can drop the temperature.
Extreme swings in temperature are generally not good for our axies.
The temperature must be monitored closely and a replacement added when the other one melts too much.
